Mom Find: Cover Your Breasts, Not Your Baby

Category: Mom Breastfeeding Solutions

Slurp & Burp Nursing CoverSlurp & Burp Nursing CoverSlurp & Burp Nursing Cover

What: Wrap for Accessible, Yet Discreet Nursing

Why: I believe in my complete right to breastfeed wherever is necessary, but I can also appreciate using discretion.  Up until now, if I needed to breastfeed in public, I risked the exposure.  I absolutely hate shawls and covers that prevent me from seeing my baby while I’m nursing.  Then along comes the Slurp & Burp.  Its 100% cotton fabric loops offer just enough material to cover above and below your breast.

The genius of it is its split design and built in burp cloth.  Put the wrap over one shoulder and under the opposite arm, then slip your breast out of your shirt and between the fabric.  It looks just as if you are cuddling.  Slurp & Burp allows you to maintain eye contact while nursing and see what you’re doing.  Available in several fashion colors and patterns, how about ordering one for casual and one for dressier occasions?  You can even choose organic cotton.  Don’t miss another milky smile.

Price: $36 - $49

Find it: SlurpBurp.com

Mom Find: Nursing? Meet Your New Brest Friend

Category: Mom Breastfeeding

My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow

What: My Brest Friend Nursing Pillows

Why: You can’t go to a baby shower without mom-to-be getting a nursing pillow, and it’s a practical gift that she’ll truly use.  But which brand to buy?  Try the one recommended most by lactation consultants, My Brest Friend

I like how it’s firm and flat on top so baby stays put, instead of rolling towards you when using nursing pillows with a rounded top.  It also has a unique wrap-around feature, which provides much-needed back support so you can enjoy a feeding session without any back or shoulder strain.  No need to hunch over, and there’s even a convenient pocket attached for you to place a bottle of water, burp cloth, your cell phone or the remote.

Choose from a wide variety of soothing prints in cotton or splurge on the super-plush Deluxe version. And if you’re a traveling mama, they have an Inflatable Travel Pillow that’s actually just as good—and easy to inflate.

Price: $14.45 - $39.60

Find it: babycenterstore.com

Deal Alert: Free standard shipping on orders over $49 with coupon code FREESHIP49 at checkout.

Top Looks for Nursing Moms

Category: Mom Breastfeeding

imageWhat: Hidden Layer Nursing Tops

Why: Get quick access to the lunch wagon when you’re wearing one of these nursing tops from Motherhood Maternity.  I’m a big fan of the hidden layer because it allows me to keep my tummy covered when I pull up my shirt to nurse.  Another reason: there’s no sacrifice in convenience while avoiding any unwanted peek-a-boos.  Motherhood’s nursing top is comfortable enough for all-day wear, plus it has a bit of length that covers the waist of my jeans.

Price: $25

Mom Find: Yogipoof for a Cushy Job

Category: Mom Breastfeeding

imageimage

What: The Yogi Solo and Yogi Nursing from Yogipoof

Why: When I was pregnant, I think I ended up with about three nursing pillows, all hand-me-downs. The point being that once you’re done nursing, there’s not a heck of a lot you can do with a nursing pillow.

Yogipoof is a line of stylish bean bag lounges, with a cover made from a blend of cotton and lycra. The Yogi Solo combined with the Yogi Nursing makes a great solution for nursing mothers. Comfy and practical, this makes the perfect nursing chair. When you’re done nursing, the Yogi Solo becomes a perfect accompaniment for the play room, and the Yogi Nursing becomes the perfect way to prop yourself up in bed for reading. Plus, the cover can be easily removed and is machine-washable. This is one nursing solution you won’t part with after weaning.

Price: $74.98 for the Yogi Nursing, $99.98 for the Yogi Solo

Mom Find: Breastfeed Easily and (More Importantly) in Style

Category: Mom Fashion Tops Breastfeeding Poll

imageimageimage

What: Hotslings launches new line of nursing tops that add style to something functional

Why: Nursing tops help breastfeeding women feed their babies in discreet ways, and they’re the perfect example of functional fashion, but they’re usually anything BUT stylish. Milkdaze, a new line by the makers of Hotslings aims to fix that.

Milkdaze, available in March 2008, will feature six different styles of tops that come in fun and trendy graphic prints or plain but beautiful solids. The line borrows its ideas from the current trends and will have tops in every style, from tunics to sleeveless wrap tops, tanks, cap sleeves, hoodies and poet sleeves. All styles will have price points between $40 and $50.

When asked about her line, Kristen DeRocha, founder of Hotslings and Milkdaze, said, “We created Milkdaze to help encourage the new culture of modern, breastfeeding moms. Breastfeeding in public is considered somewhat taboo in our society.  Not only do we want to make breastfeeding easier to do through our Milkdaze collection, but we want to mainstream public breastfeeding and help moms get the respect they deserve.” Hear! Hear!

Price: $40-$50 depending on style

Find it: milkdaze.com

Tell Us: Would You Sell Your Breast Milk?

Category: Hot Topics Mom Breastfeeding Poll

imageThis article on MSNBC caught my eye. A woman in Iowa with a freezer full of breast milk took an ad out in the local paper in an attempt to sell 100 ounces for $200 or the best offer.

It seems that the 22-year-old has more milk than she needs since her daughter won’t drink from a bottle. According to the story, she’s already donating to the University of Iowa’s Milk Bank, but had pumped the “for sale” milk before she was screened for the bank, so they won’t take it. But, apparently, neither will the people of Iowa; at press time there were no serious offers.

So, say you’re a mom with more than your share of breast milk. There’s no law against you selling your milk and you can sure use the extra money.  And as any nursing mom can tell you, pumping breast milk is work.

So, would you sell your breast milk?
