Deal of the Day: DVD Sale For When You’re Stuck Inside
Category:
Movies Deal of the Day

What: Discovery Channel Store Semi-Annual DVD Sale
Why: Everyone loves summer - except when nature ruins your plans. Is there anything worse than having to tell your child that the trip to the beach, park or pool is off because of bad weather? You can make the bad news a little bit easier to take by having a back-up plan, but you have to prepare ahead.
Throw some blankets and pillows on the floor, break out the snacks (always have snacks, I learned that during hurricane watch here in Florida). Then pull out a brand new DVD you just happen to have for the occasion. Now it’s Movie Day.
You can stock up on emergency DVDs and your family’s favorites at the
Discovery Channel’s Store Semi-Annual DVD Sale
. I’m a sucker for
Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl
that they air every Super Bowl Sunday. The DVDs are just $4.99 and feature the cutest dogs on any planet and my favorite, Kitty Cat Half-Time. You can also get a DVD of the popular preschool show
Ready Set Learn
on sale for $9.99.
There are DVDs on dinosaurs, arctic animals, and Oprah’s favorite Planet Earth, all on sale. And especially for us, six hours of tapered jeans and oversized sweatshirts on The Learning Channel’s
What Not To Wear: Mom Makeovers
($19.99).

Sex and the City - Is Your Style More Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda or Samantha?
Category:
Movies
Talk about Girl Power. Sex and the City ranked as the top movie this weekend, pulling in over $55.7 million and surpassing 1999’s American Pie to make it the best R-rated comedy opening in history. If you managed to get away from the kids and catch the flick, what did you think of all the fashion and whose style can you relate to most?
Who can forget the bird on top of Carrie’s head, Miranda’s red bathing suit showing way too much information and Samantha’s sushi “outfit.” And then there was Charlotte’s polka dot dress, which I would never, ever wear if I was in the same state (although she looked totally adorable in it).

Kid Find: High Flying Adventures with The Backyardigans
Category:
Movies Children
What: Backyardigans: High Flying Adventures
Why: If you’re hitting the road this summer, a
portable DVD player
is always a safe bet to keep the kids from asking the dreaded “Are we there yet?” every five minutes. On top of my son’s list of must have DVDs is the new
Backyardigans: High Flying Adventures
, which just so happens to be perfect for the season since it follows the pals trek around the world for their next big adventure. As always, the music is fun and catchy, and you won’t mind listening to it over and over again in the car—although we all have our breaking point, but hopefully you’ll reach your destination by then.

Movie Find: America Loves “Baby Mama” and So Do We
Category:
Movies
There weren’t many men in the audience when I saw “Baby Mama” this weekend, but it still was number one at the box office, bringing in more than $18 million. The PG-13 comedy stars Tina Fey as Kate, a 37-year-old, single career woman who decides she wants to have a baby “NOW.” When after several attempts, her doctor tells her she has a “one-in-a-million” chance of getting pregnant because of a “T-shaped uterus,” she goes through an agency to hire Angie, played by Saturday Night Live’s Amy Poehler, as a surrogate mother.
“Baby Mama” isn’t hysterical, but it’s pretty funny, especially in the scenes with Kate and Angie, who have very different ideas about pre-natal care. Kate is obsessed with healthy eating and
safety, and pregnant Angie wants to eat junk food, drink Dr. Pepper and color her hair. There’s a great scene involving giant
pre-natal vitamins
(remember those?) and something called the “Hetus” which is a lot like
“The Empathy Belly”. There’s even time for romance and Steve Martin who’s terrific as Kate’s very new age boss.
My advice is to leave the kids with dad and go see “Baby Mama” with friends. When it’s over, you’ll definitely want to hang out and share your own baby stories.

DadFinds Gift Find: DVDs for him at Amazon
Category:
Movies Dad

What: DVDs for Dad at Amazon.com
Why: When I’m not feeling particularly inspired to shop for my husband, I find that DVDs are a great go-to gift, and it looks like I’m not the only one. My friends and I recently shared how happy our guys were when they got copies of their favorite movies and TV shows. From ”
Spinal Tap
“ to the ”
Die Hard
“ movies, and even episodes of the old ”
Andy Griffith Show
,” these men love their DVDs.
Right now at Amazon there are some great deals on movies for the men in your life, and as always, shipping is free on orders of $25 or more. The two-disc collector’s edition of ”
Pirates of the Caribbean - At World’s End
“ with lots of bonus features is on sale for $22.95, and he can be the first boy on his block to own a copy of this summer’s ”
The Bourne Ultimatum
,” on sale for $13.99.
My guy’’s guilty pleasure is ”
Austin Powers - International Man of Mystery
.” Don’t even ask me how many times he’s seen it. (He won’t tell me anyway).
How about your guy? What’s his dream DVD?

Movie Find: “Enchanted” is for Girls of All Ages
Category:
Movies Children Toys

My daughters and I did our part this weekend to make Disney’s “Enchanted.” Looking around I saw women in their 70s and a little girl who yelled “That’s the biggest TV I’ve ever seen.” First movie maybe?
While I might not take a toddler to the PG-rated “Enchanted,” it’s the perfect movie for any girl five and up. The concept is clever—what would happen if a sweet, clueless princess who has doves and mice do her laundry and a wedding date with Prince Charming, gets tossed out of her fairy tale world and into New York City? And what if her even more clueless prince followed her there?
“Enchanted” offers up the classic Disney staples, an adorable rodent sidekick, toe-tapping musical numbers, and a charming six-year-old girl whose father just happens to be Patrick “McDreamy” Dempsey. Amy Adams is delightful as Princess Giselle and Susan Sarandon is as evil as any evil queen in Disney history.
If you’re tired of trekking to all those animated movies with penguins and bees, “Enchanted” is the perfect movie for a mom and daughter day out. And if your daughter really loves the movie, check out the
“Enchanted”
dolls so she can play Princess and the Lawyer. I love Giselle, but I’m not sure the
Dempsey Doll
does McDreamy justice.

Kid Find: Putting the Fun in Funky Music for Tots
Category:
Movies Music Children
What: Funky Monkey Presents Music Time DVD
Why: We’re really careful about screentime for our toddler. We do, however, use videos on multi-hour car trips. Funky Monkey’s Music Time from Punchbowl Productions is a half-hour video we’re happy to watch with our babe. It’s an animated lesson in the basics of music: rhythm, pitch and melody, and research tells us that musical education is a predictor of mathematical success. It’s filled with story-telling and original songs, and now our son claps along with the monkey as Monkey goes on his musical journey.
