Date Night with Kids: Baby Loves Disco

Category: Music Children

imageimage

What: Baby Loves Disco

Why: A mom (and former professional dancer) in Philly was sick of spending gobs of cash on outings with her kids and came up with the idea to use local night clubs during the day as a great place for moms and kids to jam out. A real DJ spins disco music along with bubble makers and fun stuff to do - all in a babyproof space. The concept has spread to dozens of cities but remains a mom and pop operation.

For those of you who can’t think of anything to do on Valentine’s Day with baby in tow, you’re in luck.  Baby Loves Disco is throwing a Valentine’s Day Super Dance Party with healthy snacks (along with a few treats), prizes and - you guessed it - lots of dancing.  Tickets start at $12 per person (crawlers are free) depending on your town, which includes Manhattan, San Diego, Boulder, Orlando and Baltimore.  Check the website for more info.

Baby Find: Rockabye Baby to Sleep

Category: Music Children

imageWhat: Rockabye Baby! CDs

Why: You probably wouldn’t think of playing Metallica, Green Day or Led Zeppelin to get baby in the mood to snooze.  Maybe Bob Marley, but even that’s pushing it.  Think again because there’s a whole slew of CDs by Rockabye Baby! that have updated your favorite rock songs into sweet lullabies.  Just imagine Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” with soft chimes, glockenspiels and other gentle instruments.  You’ll have to hear it to believe it.

My favorite is the Lullaby Renditions of U2 (it’s always a Beautiful Day with baby, isn’t it?), but they’ve also got music from No Doubt, Pink Floyd, The Cure, Radiohead and more.

Price: $17

Music Find: Gotta Get That Baby DVD

Category: Music

imageWhat: That Baby DVD & That Baby CD

Why: There is no forgetting the name and after listening to it, you won’t forget the fun. That Baby CD is today’s version of lullabies.  It has hip acoustic cover versions of songs that kids and parents LOVE from artists like Neil Diamond, The Beatles, The Pretenders, Fleetwood Mac and many more.  Now when my kids want to sing out loud in the car, I am singing along with them.

That Baby DVD is a fresh new look in children’s programming. These products were created by a Mom and Dad who wanted something more original than just another fluffy character with the same old message for their children to watch. You will find yourself enjoying the show with your kids and singing together is such a great way to connect.

Price: $34.90 for both CD & DVD

Top Five Children’s Holiday CDs

Category: Music Holidays Top Five

The market is saturated with Holiday music, and it can be hard to find CDs that delight little ears, as well as don’t cause mom’s ears unjust pain. Here are some classic picks that will entertain everyone during the holiday season.

image

1. Christmas with the Chipmunks by The Chipmunks ($11.97): It’s great when something from our own childhood makes it way into our children’s. ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ is back on the big screen, making this CD a great way to blend past with new. Besides what is Christmas without ‘The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)’?

image

2. A Charlie Brown Christmas by Vince Guaraldi Trio ($9.97): Speaking of classics, for some people, watching the “A Charlie Brown Christmas’ is their favorite way of ringing in the season. The soundtrack CD doesn’t disappoint and offers beautiful arrangements of the songs from the TV special. One listen to ‘O Tannenbaum’ or ‘Christmastime Is Here’ will put you in a delightful mood and should liven little spirits, too.

3. The Muppet Christmas Carol by Various Artists ($10.99): Good luck finding this CD on shelves, there seems to be a run on it everywhere. And with good reason, if you couldn’t tell, we’re big fans of nostalgia and this CD hits it on the head. How can you go wrong with Kermit, Ms. Piggy and the rest of The Muppets gang serenading you with holiday classics?

4. Baby Einstein: Baby Santa by Various Artists ($6.98): Sometimes taking a break from the lyrics of holiday music is needed. Baby Santa offers delightfully arranged instrumental tracks of favorites spanning the various winter holidays, including The Dreidel Song and Oshogatsu. The reggae style Joy To The World is not to be missed, as it adds a bright and fun feel to one of the most classic holiday songs.

5. What’s your favorite holiday CD? We all have one we look forward to putting on, like Elvis or a guilty pleasure CD from a former boy band! Share your favorites and get some new ideas.

Kid Find: Putting the Fun in Funky Music for Tots

Category: Movies Music Children

imageWhat: Funky Monkey Presents Music Time DVD

Why: We’re really careful about screentime for our toddler.  We do, however, use videos on multi-hour car trips.  Funky Monkey’s Music Time from Punchbowl Productions is a half-hour video we’re happy to watch with our babe.  It’s an animated lesson in the basics of music: rhythm, pitch and melody, and research tells us that musical education is a predictor of mathematical success.  It’s filled with story-telling and original songs, and now our son claps along with the monkey as Monkey goes on his musical journey.

Price: $15

SheFindsMom Music Week: Carole King’s “Really Rosie”

Category: Music

imageWhat: A Remastered CD of Really Rosie from Carole King

Why: If you grew up in the ‘70s, you no doubt heard this soundtrack (lyrics and art from author Maurice Sendak) and sang the songs for years. For both boys and girls, it’s a playlist you’ll love with hidden (or not so hidden) morals for kids. “Pierre” is a little boy who only says “I don’t care” in response to his parents until he’s swallowed by a friendly lion. And Rosie herself is a self-confident drama queen growing up in New York city with a host of imaginary friends with whom she perfoms. A must-have for the car, if anything to remember how great it was being a kid with hours to kill on a summer afternoon.
