Summer Send Off: Make the Sand Go Away
Category:
Solutions Summer
What: Sand Witch
Why: I have to admit, when I read about a product that makes sand disappear from your skin at the beach, I was skeptical. I don’t mind sand as much as other people, but I hate it when we track about a pail-full into the car.
Sand Witch is this talc-free powder made of all natural food products with no chemicals or additives. There is a scented version that smells like coconut, a scented shimmer and an unscented Sand Witch.
But does it work? My friend and I brought it to the beach and got good and sandy. We poured the Sand Witch into our hands and started rubbing at the sand on our hands and feet. You have to make sure you use enough but within a few seconds all the sand was gone and our skin felt and looked great. It didn’t work quite as well on wet sand, but it’s called Sand Witch not Mud Witch.
Even if you and your kids don’t mind a little sand or hit the showers before you leave the beach, Sand Witch is great to rub on your hands before you tackle the contents in your picnic cooler. Since it is talc-free and all natural, it’s safe for small children and babies. No more sandy diapers! That really is a day at the beach.
Price: $5.99 for 3 oz. or $19.99 for a three-pack in a mesh beach bag.

Summer Send Off: Hit the Beach One Last Time with Weleda
Category:
Children Skin Care Summer
What: Weleda Children’s Sunscreen
Why: Depending on where you live, you could have several trips to the beach left before you call it a summer. Here in Florida I’ll be hitting the beach for months. (Don’t hate me). Instead of carrying a bunch of different lotions to the beach, pick up this travel-friendly Weleda Children’s Sunscreen. It’s got an SPF of 18, not too high and not too low for the whole family, and it’s waterproof. It has natural minerals, zinc oxide, organic shea butter and carrot extract, and it’s especially formulated for sensitive skin.
Speaking of sensitive skin, just in case you overindulge trying to get the most out of the end-of-season rays, it might be a good idea to pick up a tube of Weleda Burn-Care for $8. Even if you’re sun-smart like we hope you are, keep this handy gel in the medicine chest for any burns or insect bites.
Price: $15

Children Bed Time Solutions Summer
What: Lightweight Cotton Swaddler
Why: You might already be aware of the benefits of swaddling: less crying, more sleep. But since newborns don’t regulate their body temperature, summertime swaddling could leave you anxious. Don’t worry. Instead, use the Solana Swaddle Wrap. It’s made of super-lightweight, breathable cotton (almost like a cheesecloth). The benefits of swaddling are achieved, and baby stays nice and cool. It’s also great to drape over a car seat or carrier to protect your little one from the sun. Again, no need to fret about airflow.
The Solana Swaddle is well-sized (45"x55") and available in several patterns and colors.
Price: $20-$30

MomFinds Solution: Easy-to-Apply Sunscreen
Category:
Children Skin Care Mommy Must Haves Solutions Summer
Problem: I prefer using spray-on sunscreen because it’s easier to apply and less messy than sunscreen lotions, but my son hates it. If he’s not running around the house trying to avoid me and the bottle, he’s screaming like a mad man.
Solution: I found these
SPF 30 Sun Protection Wipes from Shady Day, and not only are they easy to use, but my son doesn’t seem to mind them. He just thinks I’m wiping him down with a wet wipe, which I pretty much do all day long. Besides the ease of application, this stuff actually works. We just got back from Palm Springs, where it was a painful 115 degrees, and these wipes kept the entire family free from sunburn.
Price: $14 for resealable pack of 15 wipes

Children Skin Care Summer
What: Natural Suncare and Bug Repellent by California Baby
Why: California Baby has everything you need to keep your baby safe and happy this summer. Their sunscreens are chemical- and tear-free, and very effective. For everyday wear choose their no fragrance SPF 18 Moisturizing Sunscreen Lotion; for higher spf coverage during days on the beach, their SPF 30+ Sunblock Stick is fantastic and easy to apply in it’s convenient form. One thing to know is that chemical-free lotions tend to sit on top of the skin, so little ones who look a bit like Casper will be the hip kids around the pool this summer.
And when the sun goes down and the bugs come out, their bug repellents are a deet-free way to keep your babe’s sweet skin protected. Everything contains ingredients with which you’re familiar, and none of them will irk you.
Price: Starting at $4.49

Top Five Sunscreen for Babies and Kids
Category:
Children Skin Care Summer Top Five
Your little one has the cute SPF swimsuit, the matching beach hat that covers his ears and neck, and possibly even some cool shades. But that doesn’t give him or her a free pass when it comes to sunblock. With so many different options on the market, it can be difficult to choose the best one, but whichever brand you end up using, just remember to apply generously (don’t forget those ears!) and to reapply as needed throughout the day. Here are our top five picks:
1. California Baby Natural Bug Blend SPF 30+ Sunscreen Lotion:
($14) Battle sunburns AND bug bites with this gentle, yet hard-working sunscreen. The citronella keeps the bugs off (DEET-free!), while the chemical-free SPF 30 keeps harmful rays at bay. If the scent is too strong, get the unscented
version.
2. Coppertone Continuous Kids Sunblock Spray:
($8.49) If you’ve got a wiggly toddler who hates it when you slather on the sunblock, this no-rub spray is for you. The light mist sprays evenly and easily, and it’s waterproof, so your little fish can stay in the water longer.
3. Aveeno Baby Sunblock Lotion:
($9.49) Recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation, this SPF 55 lotion with oatmeal (a natural skin-soother) glides on smoothly without that icky, sticky feeling you get with a lot of other lotions. It’s also hypoallergenic and fragrance-free.
4. Mustela Sun Cream for Sensitive Areas
($10) This little tube packs a punch with its 100% mineral sunscreen combination of titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and iron oxide—ingredients that protect against all the sun’s harmful rays. Perfect for ears, cheeks and nose.
5. Erbaviva Children’s Sunscreen: ($28) A favorite among eco-conscious parents, this sunblock is made from natural, botanical ingredients, offering SPF 15 without any harsh chemicals.
