Top Five Ideas for Leftover Halloween Candy

Category: Halloween Solutions Top Five

image

By now you’ve probably scammed all the really good stuff from your child’s Halloween bucket, and they’ve picked out their favorites. Or you’ve stored some chocolate in the freezer and stashed some away as treats for later. Now you’re left with candy your kid’s not crazy about or you don’t want him to have, and in a couple of weeks that’s going to start getting icky and sticky. You don’t have to watch it transform into one gooey glob. Here are our top five ways to recycle that unwanted Halloween candy from a list at About.com.

1. Share your surplus, especially hard candies and mints, with a local nursing home or other organization.

2. Save the leftovers in a cool, dry place to stuff in a piñata for a birthday or holiday. Oriental Trading Company has a variety of empty pinatas for $15.95.

3. Choose some colorful hard candies to decorate a gingerbread house at Christmas.

4. If you have too much chocolate (yes, there is such a thing), crush candy bars in a food processor and freeze for use as a topping for ice cream or add-in to cookie dough. If you really want to get creative, whip up a Butterfinger Banana Cake or Apple Candy Bar Salad. These recipes and others can be found at cdkitchen.com

5. Get artistic. Make pictures with candy corn and other non-sticky candies (but don’t save them in your scrapbook).

And while you may not be buying candy for a while, here’s a tip I learned from a parenting magazine years ago. Halloween is the perfect time to buy your children a new toothbrush. They’ll need it now more than any time of the year, and you won’t forget when you replaced it. There are several plain and power brushes on sale at Drugstore.comicon.

Tell us. Do you have any uses for leftover Halloween candy that we didn’t mention?

What better way to celebrate a holiday than with a book. These children’s titles are perfect for introducing Halloween to the littlest trick-or-treaters or for reminding the well-seasoned veterans what it’s all about.

image1. Biscuit’s Pet & Play Halloween by Alyssa Satin Capucilli ($6.99): This adorable book lets you experience various Halloween costumes as you follow Biscuit and a little girl on their trick-or-treating adventures.

2. Corduroy’s Best Halloween Ever! by Don Freeman ($3.99): See what costume earns the beloved bear, Cordroy, some special honors on Halloween.

image
3. Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson ($6.99): A generous witch is flying around and finds herself helping various animals along the way. The question is how much room does she have?

image
4. Boo! Made You Jump! (Charlie and Lola) ($3.99): In this charming book, Lola is trying her hardest to make Charlie jump. But it seems like an impossible task. Will she ever make him jump? Read it and find out.

Tell Us: What’s Your Kid Wearing for Halloween?

Category: Children Halloween Poll

image

I just got back from my son’s preschool, where they had a cute, chaotic Halloween parade (two givens when you’re dealing with three-year olds).  He was dressed up as a cowboy, complete with a little horse, and all his friends were decked out in equally adorable costumes, which ranged from Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, to a fuzzy chicken and a couple of superheroes

We want to know…what’s your trick-or-treater going to wear on Halloween?  Did you make the costume or buy it?  And if you have photos, even better.  Send us your favorite shots and we’ll post them tomorrow.

Couple’s Costumes: Wear Them or Skip Them?

Category: Halloween Poll

It’s been a while since I’ve worn a costume for Halloween.  Usually, I just wear all black and top it off with my light-up devil headband.  And my husband wears a black tee that says “Trick or Treat.” We’ve never worn a couple’s costume; the thought never crossed our minds.  I know, we’re boring, but we do hand out the best candy in the neighborhood.

For those of you who are more festive, here are some outrageous couple’s costumes I found on the web.  We want to know, would you wear them?  In public?

image

Plug & Socket: The prongs from the plug actually fit into the sockets.

imageimage

Bun in the Oven and Bun Maker: Perhaps a cheeky way to announce your pregnancy?

image

Ball & Chain: A literal interpretation of the age-old adage.  Is she wearing anything underneath?

Pregnant Nun & Happy Father: So wrong and sinfully funny—you’ll have to pray for forgiveness after wearing it.

Halloween Find: The Cutest Baby Costumes at Lillian Vernon

Category: Children's Fashion Halloween

imageimage

What: Adorable Halloween Costumes for Baby at Lillian Vernonicon

Why: My favorite part about Halloween is the reaction you get when you knock on the neighbor’s door. You’re taking their candy and they deserve something in return so instead of going for the scare, go for the laugh. As soon as I saw this Little Tree Air Freshenericon costume I started smiling. Just imagine the laughs you’d get with the real thing. I dare you to look at this picture and not giggle. And going green is the thing right now.

I also love this Tootsie Rollicon costume. Sweets for the sweet.

But the best thing about taking baby out for Halloween?  They’ll get the smiles, but you get to keep the candy.

Price: Air Freshener, $19.98; Tootsie Roll $14.98, marked down from $24.98
