Spring Kids’ Party Tips: St. Patrick’s Day, Easter and More

Category: Holidays

image
1.Cute Invitations: Find great invites at FineStationery.com for St. Patrick’s Day and other upcoming holidays.

image
2. Buy Décor that Lasts: Instead of a whole bunch of paper decorations that will wind up in the trash (or recycling), invest in pieces that you can keep and use year after year. For St. Patrick’s Day, anything green goes. Get a new green table cloth, some green vases or platters.  For Easter do pastels.

3.Play Dough Station: Have some play dough with toys and cookie cutters out on a washable table. Keep the station “open” during the party so kids can wander over, especially if they don’t happen to be interested in what other kids are doing. Make a big batch of homemade dough. It’s easiest to just use one color so the colors don’t get mixed up.

image
4.Make it, then eat it: Have kids put their own toppings on individual pizzas or decorate cookies or cupcakes.  Fill little bowls with different sprinkles and candies. Kids can make their own sundaes. Any of these activities are great because it’s food and an activity.

image
5. Spring Planting: Have kids decorate a pot and/or plant seeds. It’s an activity and a favor. For St. Patrick’s Day use Shamrock seeds, for Easter try carrots, and flowers for May Day. You can buy inexpensive terra cotta pots at crafts stores or online. Give an extra seed packet or kids garden tool to each child as a favor.

Holiday Break Down: Tips for Painless Holiday Clean Up

Category: Holidays For the Home Seasonal

It was fun while it lasted, but it’s time to take down the decorations and pack it up for next year.  Here are some tips to ease the pain of getting back to normal.

image• Clean up dried greens and flowers before tackling other decorations. Compost the ones that you can. The longer they sit, the messier.  And try to reuse or recycle your tree

• I’ve seen some neat looking storage containers for ornaments, but I’ve done fine using plain plastic storage crates along with leftover tissue paper and bubble wrap. If you want an ornament box, try this gorgeous box from cooking.com. More economical choices come from the Container Store and Lowes

• I have had success wrapping strings of lights around a cardboard tube or a piece of rolled up newspaper. Let us know if you have a better idea or have used some of the contraptions on the market.

• If it’s not too late, go through your holiday cards and save the envelopes with the addresses. Do what you will with the cards (scrapbook, chuck or something in between), but the envelopes are key to keeping your addresses current. Update your digital address book, or just save the whole envelopes in a big envelope for when you do your cards next year.

Do you have any holiday break down tips?  Please share.

Really Bad Holiday Gifts: Did You Get Any this Year?

Category: Holidays

image

Last week we asked you to tell us about your worst holiday gifts, and we agree—they were really bad.  Here are just a few examples:

My ex Mother-in-Law always bought me the ugliest, brightest sweaters and the old up-to-your-belly button underwear that were always two times too big, and always solid white. –Sheile B.

A bull penis pen.. yuck! –Reeva

An electrolysis kit. Now how is one supposed to take that? –Mama Zen

I received a plastic thrift store ‘Jesus on a plaque’ with part of Jesus missing. I kept it because I thought it was so funny. –Danielle

A giant flashlight in the shape of a fish. You had to squeeze the fish’s gills to get the light to shine. Through its mouth. –Heather H.

I can’t say I received anything bad this year (guess I was on everyone’s ‘Nice’ list), but not everyone can be so lucky.  Tell us, did you get anything bad this year?

Tell Us: What is Your Favorite Holiday Tradition?

Category: Holidays

imageI confess, since we’re a Hanukkah household, I always, always go to the movies on Christmas. Years ago, we had very little company, but these days a trip to the cinema is getting more and more popular, and big movies even open on Christmas day.  And I’m in Florida (don’t hate me) so a trip to the beach isn’t out of the question, especially since my tan is sort of fading (again, please don’t hate me).

I know this isn’t exactly what you’d call a traditional Christmas, but one thing I like to do is pull out one of the many board games I’ve picked up throughout the years. I’m kind of a collector. Now that my kids are older it’s harder to find the time to play, but they’re usually up for a quick round of Unoicon and you can never go wrong with the Cranium games. They’re supposed to be for kids, but I know plenty of adults who get a kick out of Cadoo. It’s a winner of the Platinum Best Toy Award and will get you thinking, laughing and moving around.

So, please tell us, do you have a holiday tradition? Something that Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without? Food?  Fun?  Family?

How Much Have You Spent on Holiday Gifts?

Category: Holidays Poll Shopping

image
Every year I give myself a budget on how much to spend on holiday gifts, and every year that budget gets busted.  I’ll buy one thing for someone and then I’ll find something else…and something else that I know he or she will love.  They’re usually not big ticket items, so it’s not a big deal, but I forget that little things add up.  And boy do they add up.  It is the season for giving, though, right?

What about you?  Have you stuck to your budget?

How much have you spent on all your holiday gifts?
