Jen Singer Tells Us What ‘Good Moms’ Really Want for Mother’s Day: Five of You Will Win Her Book!
Category: Books Mother's Day

Who: Jen Singer, parenting humorist and author of You’re a Good Mom (and Your Kids Aren’t So Bad Either)
What Jen Says: Think you know exactly what to give the beleaguered, “mom-aholic” in your life this Mother’s Day? Maybe dinner and a movie or give her a nice bouquet of flowers? Stray away from the “same ‘ol, same ‘ol” and give her something she really wants.
1. Sleep: If sleep is the new sex, then moms probably think of sleep every five minutes. Give Mom homemade coupons for a full night of uninterrupted sleep.
2. Time off for good behavior: In a 24/7 job with no vacation days or sick days, sometimes Mom needs to wander the mall alone. Give her an entire day off, to visit a spa, lunch with friends or see movies that aren’t animated.
3. Recognition: Everybody needs a pat on the back, but moms don’t get a performance review. Give her a holiday bonus: money to spend on just herself along with a homemade certificate of recognition.
4. Her own space: She shares everything from her mini-van to her lunch to her computer with her kids. Make a “Mom Only Zone,” the one spot in the house where kids are not allowed to park their toy cars or share with Mom.
5. A night out, sans kids: You simply can’t have a quiet, romantic dinner at home when someone is shouting your name from the potty. Take her out, alone, to a restaurant that doesn’t provide crayons for coloring on the tablecloth.
Five lucky readers will win a copy of Singer’s book, You’re a Good Mom (and Your Kids Aren’t So Bad Either) ! To be considered, tell us which of Singer’s Mother’s Day gift suggestions you want the most by Saturday, 5/10/08 at 11:59 PM. Five winners will be chosen during a random drawing and will be notified via e-mail to receive the prize. One comment per person.

Top Five Last Minute Mother’s Day Gifts
Category: Mother's Day
Uh oh! Check the calendar lately? There are just a few days left to find a gift for your favorite mom, but it doesn’t have to be obvious that you left things to the last minute. Follow our last-minute guide and all you’ll have to worry about is getting dinner reservations. You don’t expect her to cook, do you?
Style Savvy Mom: Always on the prowl for more shoes and bags? We love this patent leather clutch from Charles David Wynn ($155) because of its clean lines, sensible but sexy design and pop of color. Overnight shipping is free.
Bling it On Mom: She may be a mom, but she still wants to sparkle. This eye-catching 33-Carat Sky Blue Topaz Bracelet is set in sterling silver and is the ideal accessory for spring and summer. Almost as good as her reaction when she opens the box, will be knowing you got it for 50% off ($150) with free Federal Express shipping.
Cozy Up on the Couch Mom: Show her that she deserves some “me time” and pick up a subscription to Netflix , for movies she wants to see but missed at the multiplex, delivered to her door. You can choose the monthly plan that matches her lifestyle. It’s a gift that she’ll enjoy all year, especially if you watch the kids while she watches the movie.
Any Mom: There’s a reason that Mother’s Day is right behind Valentine’s Day in fresh flower purchases. Women love flowers. But, if you want your gift to last long after the petals fall, send this bouquet of pink roses in a pretty Laura Ashley water pitcher ($49-$69).
New Mom: Sorry, but Mother’s Day is for moms and not for the baby. It’s OK to buy her a nice diaper bag or stroller, just make sure to also give something just for her. Nothing is more classic and timeless than the silver heart “Mom" Locket ($55). It says it all - and with free FEDEX shipping, it will get to her on time.

My Selfish Mother’s Day Proposal
Category: Mother's Day Poll
When my husband first asked me what I wanted for Mother’s Day, I envisioned a day at the spa, with attendants pampering me from head to toe. Maybe even a champagne brunch. Then I thought about how much I’d miss my kiddos. I’m still breastfeeding my six-month old, so being gone for a day of luxury means pumping for me and bottles for her. I’m not opposed to bottles when necessary, like when I’m at work, but I feel a smidge guilty if the reason isn’t so noble. And what is Mother’s Day anyhow, if I’m not being a Mother.
Turns out, what I really want is to spend the day with my babies (the older one is just over two years old), with none of the work. I suggest that I get to play all day, but if there’s a diaper to change, a meal to be made (other than the breast kind), or a nap to be arranged, Daddy does it.
We’d start the day building towers and towns (then knocking them down) with blocks. My infant and I would play pattycake while she bounces in the jumper. After naps, we’ll use the double stroller and take a walk through the neighborhood. In a way, it’s still a selfish plan. But hey, am I not entitled to a bit of indulgence on Mother’s Day? So buck up, Daddy, and give Mom the glory. And just between us moms, I wouldn’t say no to a one-hour massage, either.
What about you?

Top Five Mother’s Day Gifts for Grandma
Category: Mother's Day
Buying gifts for grandma (my mom) isn’t always easy. She only likes one perfume and my dad has that covered. She’s too tough to buy clothes for and books are “a waste of money” when she can get them free from the library. So, my Mother’s Day mantra is - Upgrade. I focus on replacing something she’s had a bit too long or something that’s a bit too, how do I put this, OK, cheap.
If your mom picks her moisturizer up at the same place she buys her produce, it’s up to you to show her what’s out there. My mom would never spend big money on skincare for herself, but she was thrilled to receive Cellular Renewal from Nutraluxe. She says the serum goes on “like silk” and her skin feels firmer and looks “younger.” Collagen X-Plosion, with four peptides also battles lines and wrinkles while restoring collagen production. Don’t forget to click on the discount codes to save money on products and shipping.
Check out grandma’s favorite tote bag. If it’s A) clear plastic, B) old canvas or C) just plain ugly, it’s time to trash it. The Big Buddha Aloha Tote is stylish but not too trendy. It’s available in basic black or orange or green fabric if she could use some color in her wardrobe. Pockets will keep her organized and silver hardware and shiny PVC trim will keep her fashionable. It’s $88 and ships free.
My family still jokes about “Nana’s ugly blue bathrobe.” It was legendary in its hideousness and was one of the first upgrades we took on. I know your favorite grandmother’s robe can’t be as bad, but just in case, we know she’ll love this lightweight Soft Cotton Robe . You can choose from six pretty colors in regular and petite sizes and it hits about mid-calf. She can wash it in the machine and for $6 they’ll gift box it for you.
While some grandmas are all about e-mail, others happily, still believe in the hand-written note. Instead of trying to get her to come over to the cyberside, honor her wish to write “the old-fashioned way” with
Personalized Note Cards. You can decide on the style, script and color, making this a truly personal Mother’s Day gift.
Didn’t somebody once say “You can never have enough jewelry or watches?” No, well then I’m saying it. If grandma is constantly adding to her jewelry wardrobe, give her something unusual but classic, that she wouldn’t buy for herself. This polished gold Marc Jacobs Pear Charm Watch Necklace is definitely a conversation piece and the perfect gift for the woman who doesn’t like to wear a wrist watch. There’s even a pretty little heart on the chain to remind her how much you love her.
