Sponsored Post: Open a Virtual Lemonade Stand And Help Support Ovarian Cancer Research
Category:
Philanthropy
What: This summer,
Electrolux is partnering with the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund as part of a $500,000 commitment to help fight ovarian cancer with a cool
lemonade stand campaign.
For every virtual lemonade stand that opens, they’ll donate $1 to the cause – and you can raise more by “selling” your wares to friends and family.

Why: Needless to say, it’s a great cause – and an easy way to help out. Plus, if you open your own lemonade stand, you’ll be entered for a chance to win a new French Door Refrigerator from
Electrolux (that sleek-looking one below).
How: Kelly Ripa’s on board with her own stand at
Kelly-Confidential.com; visit the site to sign up and get started with your own.
You can even pick your flavors – from raspberry mint to citrus twist – and
chefs’ favorite lemonade recipes.

Mother’s Day Gifts that Give Back
Category:
Mother's Day Philanthropy
As much as I love Mother’s Day presents, I am also well aware that there are many needy charities out there. Here are some merchants and organizations that prove it is just as good to give as it is to receive:
When you purchase the Freedom Cake ($75) for a recipient here in the US, Bake Me A Wish! will deliver a gourmet cake to a soldier serving overseas. Ordering this chocolate cake will ensure that the recipient, as well as the soldier, will be getting a delicious treat. The serviceman (or woman) receives the exact same cake in the name of the person to whom you sent it. And along with the cake, your recipient will get a card informing her that a cake has been sent to a soldier in their name, alongside an imprint of the American Flag. That’s one way to make eating dessert a patriotic duty.
For a mere $40 MercyCorps will send a Family Garden Kit to help support agricultural programs. A Garden Kit encourages a family to grow their own food well as incorporate fresh produce into their diet. Your recipient will receive a card acknowledging the gift, as well as a huge feeling of goodwill.
Why not adopt an endangered panda for the animal lover in your life? The World Wildlife Fund has adoption kits that range from $25 to $250. All include an adoption certificate and photo, and there are plenty of species to choose from. Besides, you are not going to find a gift cuter than that sweet black and white face.
Flowers are always a good choice for Mother’s Day. The Gerbera Daises ($39.99) from giftback.com is a two-for-one deal. Ten percent of every purchase goes to a charity of the buyer’s choice. There are plenty to choose from, and the recipient of your beautiful bouquet will know that a portion of the proceeds went to a good cause. Won’t that fact alone make the flowers smell sweeter?

Buy Tiny TOMS and They’ll Give a Pair to a Child in Need
Category:
Children's Shoes Philanthropy
What: Tiny TOMS Shoes
Why: Is there anything better than treating yourself to a new pair of shoes, knowing that you’re doing something good for others at the same time? First I learned about
Soul of Africa Shoes, a company that trains women in Africa to create shoes, pays them a fair wage and then donates part of the proceeds to programs for children with AIDS. No brainer, huh?
Now you can give back when you buy
Tiny TOMS Shoes
for your kids. For every pair of shoes you buy, TOMS will donate a pair to a child in need. To date, TOMS has given over 130,000 pairs of shoes since their beginning in 2006, and they plan to give 300,000 pairs of shoes in the next twelve months.
And the
Tiny TOMS
are cute and fun. They’re available in pre-walker and toddler sizes, in a variety of colors and patterns including a buffalo print and pink camo. And again, for every pair you order, one will be donated to a needy child. Seriously, does it get better than that?
Price: $34 - $49 with free shipping

Mom Find: No Excuse Needed to Buy Soul of Africa Shoes
Category:
Mom Fashion Shoes Philanthropy
What: Soul of Africa Shoes
Why: There’s no guilt at all involved in adding to your shoe collection when you pick up a pair from The Soul of Africa. This sustainable development initiative was started by family members of Clarks and Froggie Shoes. Women in South Africa are trained and paid a fair wage to create hand-stitched shoes. They support their families and part of the proceeds go to help children affected by AIDS. Since 2004 Soul of Africa has raised more than $1 million to fund the Khulani orphanage, child care programs and a hospital.
I tried the
Zandie in red, a great casual shoe that’s a cross between a ballet flat and a moccasin. The shoe is super comfortable with flexible, soft leather and a padded footbed. I love these shoes and what they stand for.

Holiday Gifts That Give Back
Category:
Gifts Holidays Philanthropy
We all love giving presents, but it feels even better when you buy something that you know is doing the right thing.

Cargo Cosmetics’ PlantLove Botanical Lipstick
($20) is the perfect give-back stocking stuffer. They’re made entirely of corn (believe it or not), contain no mineral oils or petroleum and $2 from the sale of every lipstick goes to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. All the shades are named for the celebrities who designed them, including Mariska Hargitay and Courteney Cox.

The
L’Oreal Paris Hope Necklace
($34.95) is designed with two eternity rings in sterling silver and cubic zirconia crystals as a symbol of the fight against ovarian cancer. Five dollars from every sale will benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Not a fan of CZ? They have a
14K white gold version with genuine 1.25 carat diamond
for $950.
We’re big fans of
Kee-Ka. Their products are made of 100% organic cotton and low-impact dyes, and they focus on Fair Trade and Fair Wage policies. This
Newborn Gift Set ($65) is available in three adorable styles (we adore the ‘Sweetpea’ set) and comes wrapped in a natural ribbon.
You can save five acres of rainforest for one year and make somebody really, really happy with this
Hostess Gift Soap Set ($19.99). The set contains four bars of soap made with fair trade ingredients, natural scents and oils and organic aloe along with sample packets of skin and hair products and two Save Your Rainforest Wristbands all wrapped up in recycled packaging, of course.
