ZZ’s Please: Top Five Sleep Starters for Exhausted Moms
Category: Mom Solutions Top Five
Before I had kids for some silly reason I thought labor and changing diapers were going to be the hardest part of motherhood. Then I realized that chronic lack of sleep trumps it all. To combat the fatigue, advice books recommend that new moms should nap when their baby naps. It’s hard, though, because baby’s nap time seems the perfect time to do the other few thousand things you’ve been putting off, but it’s good to try it when you can. But what if you can’t fall asleep and you have precious moments to waste? Try these five sleep starters to squeeze in as many zzz’s as you can.
1. Supportive nursing bras are a must while you are running around town, but the hardware can hamper a good rest. Yet going freestyle can quickly lead to a cold milky mess. Slip on a Maidenform Bralette ($11.20) for comfortable sleeping. It has just enough stretch to hold a nursing pad in place without rubbing, chaffing or constricting, and enough support so that you can answer the door mid-nap without major jiggling.
2. Soft sheets are a must. You’ve probably spent hours picking out bedding for your little one, so we’ve picked some bedding you might like. Try The Company Store’s Organic Sheets (on sale $21.99 - $40.99), made from certified 100% organic cotton. They are a soft 230 thread count and are not bleached or dyed.
3. Dust mites seem to live everywhere and can cause coughing and breathing difficulty. So your pillow is a place where you’d appreciate as few as possible. CleanRest allergy free pillows ($39.99-$49.99) are designed with a technology they call MicronOne. It blocks dust mites and other allergy causing tidbits from getting into the stuffing of the pillow. So you can actually breathe more easily, as well as breathe easier that there aren’t those creepy crawlies setting up shop while you’re in slumberland.
4. I love wearing night masks pilfered from my (too few) first class airline trips, so I can easily dream that I am on vacation. Then I saw these Bath and Body Works sheep sleep masks ($10) and I’m temped to toss my others. The masks are extremely soft and block out light. Hopefully they can also help you block out your problems for a little while so you can get some well deserved rest.
5. I believe in aromatherapy, and there are many scents that are conducive to sleep. But you need an effective delivery method. Anything involving fire does not go with sleep, especially if you have kids. A safer alternative is Aromafloria Sleep Ease Inhalation Beads ($6), which are like old-timey smelling salts. Crystals scented with natural oils including valerian and lavender are contained in a little muslin bag that you hold up to your nose and inhale.

Ready to Have Baby? Don’t Leave Home Without These Hospital Essentials
Category: Mommy Must Haves Top Five
Honey, it’s time! Is your bag packed and by the door, ready for your mad dash to the hospital? You’ve got your camera, phone list and nursing bra. Here are some other essentials that you won’t want to leave at home:
1. Lip Balm: Dry lips are no fun, especially when you’ve got childbirth to contend with. The hospital might provide Vaseline if you ask (and when they can get around to it), but wouldn’t you rather have some Burt’s Bees?
2. A Comfy Pillow: Hospital pillows are hard, flat and wrapped in vinyl. Bring yours with a distinct pillow case so you don’t forget it.
3. Panties: Go for cotton hipsters or briefs in a size larger than you normally wear. Also, I suggest black or another dark color. Do I really need to tell you why? Go cheap, as you may want to just pitch them when you’re done. Of course, you could always wear the disposable ones the hospital provides…
4. Music: Most hospitals aren’t wired for an iPod. Bring some CD’s or burn playlists of your favorite music for labor and afterward. Maybe something relaxing or inspirational for the tough times. Perhaps a mellow mix for when you just lie there, gazing into your newborn’s eyes. We listened to Miles Davis.
5. Entertainment for Your Partner: Daddy or Auntie is likely to get bored after several hours of labor. A few magazines or a handheld game might help out. You may or may not be up for reading, but make sure to throw in something you’d like, too.

MomFarah’s Top Five Finds of 2007
Category: Children Meal Time Potty Training Strollers Toys Top Five
It was another great year to be a mom at MomFinds, and probably an even better one to be a kid in my house. Like the other moms, it was hard to keep the list to a top five, but here are the ones that made it easier and more fun to be a mom…and kid.
PlasmaCar ($69.95): My three-year-old spent the summer on his PlasmaCar, and when he felt like sharing, my husband and I took turns taking it for a spin around the block. It’s a fantastic way to introduce young ones to wheels, and we love how easy it is to use.

Geuther Family High Chair ($229): This one doesn’t hide out in the kitchen. Nope, it stays out with the rest of our dining chairs, and works as well as it looks. My son can easily climb in and out of it, and it’s sturdy enough for an adult to sit on.

Boon Potty Bench ($29.99): We went through a lot of potties this summer, but it was the Boon Potty Bench that my son used to hone his potty skills. It was comfortable for his little bottom, easy to clean, and as the mom of a little boy, I loved the rubber guard on the front for the occasional “spray.”

Maclaren Volo Stroller ($120): We hit the road several times this year, and the Volo was a life-saver. It’s light as a feather, easy to push and my son never complained. And, of course, it’s a Maclaren so it looks good.
P’kolino’s Little Reader ($95): This cozy little chair is where my son hangs out to read his favorite books (right now he’s really into Put Me In the Zoo) . It’s fun watching him sit quietly in a spot made just for him, and it’s so lightweight he can carry it around the house whenever he needs his own seat. And do I have to say how cute it is?

MomSharyn’s Top Five Finds of 2007
Category: Dad Mom Bath and Body Beauty Top Five
I’ve had a great first year writing for MomFinds and discovered a lot of terrific products for me, my kids and my husband, who now knows that men don’t have to buy all their skin care products in the supermarket. Narrowing these fabulous finds down to five is nearly impossible. At least that many have worked their way into my daily routine. So this is a by-no-means-inclusive list with way too many cool things left off.
Thanks to MomFinds, my skin is very happy right now. I’ve added several products to my repertoire, but my favorite might be the Terralina line. The products are made with botanicals and natural ingredients, but they feel like a luxury line. They are gentle enough for sensitive skin and have a lovely soft scent. I also love that Terralina uses recycled materials in its packaging and does not test on animals. Prices are very reasonable at $8-$42 and shipping is free.

Choosing my favorite make-up find was another toughie, but if we’re talking “go to” product, it’s my Melissa Page Bronzer/Blush Duo in Two Fabulous ($18). I’ve used this when I was dark this summer and now when I’m a bit paler. It comes with a mirror and a great little brush. Sometimes I use just the blush, sometimes the bronzer and once in a while I swirl them together. It’s positively foolproof. Another bonus, it seems to last forever!

I had been looking for an alternative to those super menthol, medicated muscle rubs for years before I tried Stiff and Sore by Kathleen Lewis ($24). This is one of those “too good to be true” products. It’s 100% natural with aloe gel, arnica and grapeseed oil. It smells minty and not like medicine and it works! Even better, you can feel good about using it on your children after a tough soccer game or phys ed class.

My favorite “everyone should have one” find is the Bag for Life from The Body Shop. It’s cool-looking, tough and perfect for toting everything from books to produce to everyday stuff. It costs just $5 and $2 of that goes to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. By a bunch and use them as gift bags.

My husband had almost as hard a time as I did choosing his favorite find. Ultimately, he chose SeaOra’s After Shave Balm with Dead Sea minerals, aloe vera and green tea extract ($19.99). He says it never irritates his skin and makes his face feel smooth and soft (and I agree). He also loves the mild scent.

All of us writers here at MomFinds have the enviable job of reviewing some of the coolest stuff around for moms, babies and kids. As any loyal reader already knows, there’s a lot of great stuff out there. It was hard to narrow it down to just my five picks for the best of 2007, but here it goes.
Uppababy Vista Stroller ($599): I will admit I’m somewhat of a stroller snob. But that doesn’t mean I can justify spending $1000 on a stroller. Uppababy’s Vista isn’t cheap, but it’s totally worth it. It looks great, functions well, navigates urban and rugged terrain alike with ease. And, well, as any stroller snob will agree with, it’s totally great-looking.

Shoes from Vincent: Without question, my favorite kids shoes are made by Vincent. This line of high-quality and great-looking children’s shoes was launched by two Swedish designers. The brand was named for the eight-year-old nephew of the designers. Vincent shoes are fun, fashionable, but most importantly, they hold up under a ton of abuse from the young ones. I just have one request for the designers—when will Vincent start making shoes in my size?

Customized Shirts and Hoodies from Neighborhoodies: I absolutely love how designers have embraced the interactivity of the Web to develop really clever ways to “build your own” designs online. Whether you’re getting a custom hoodie made that features your neighborhood’s name, or making a cow that says “hoot” with their new “Petting Zoo” line, Neighborhoodies is my favorite of the custom sites online.

Playspot from Skip*Hop ($79): For too long, we parents had little choice for foam tiles but the alphabet tiles in garish primary colors. Leave it to the clever designers at Skip*Hop to design something that is truly versatile, functional, and downright stylish. You can configure the Playspot tiles to create a variety of different and color combinations. They cover a lot of ground, with a roomy and cushy 72x54 inches.

Flair Pedestal Highchair from Boon ($199): When it comes to well-designed children’s products, you can’t forget Boon. Whether they are coming up with a stylish way to store the stuffed animals that threaten to take over your home (the Animal Bags ) or even helping potty train with the excellent design of their Potty Bench, everything they do is pretty much exceptional. But it is the Flair Pedestal Highchair that won my heart this gear. Beautifully designed, it doesn’t overwhelm your kitchen space and looks lovely, even when your little one isn’t sitting in it.

The Best Diaper Bags of 2007
Category: Mom Fashion Diaper Bags Top Five
Whether it was a stylish tote that could easily pass as an “It Bag,” or a backpack, carry all or convertible, there was a diaper bag just right for every mom (and some for dads, too). Here are a few of our favorites from 2007. Enjoy!

1. Skip Hop Duo Diaper Bag ($50): This messenger bag has the works: a pocket for wallets, keys, cell phone, bottles, cups and (oh yeah!) diapers. It clips on to any stroller and comes with an adjustable strap, giving you multiple carrying options.

2. Dante Beatrix Stroller Tote ($100): Playful and practical, Dante Beatrix’s stroller totes make it fun to carry a diaper bag again. And clips on the back of the bag make it a snap to attach to stroller handles.

3. DadGear Backpack Pro Diaper Bag ($98): Stylish without being fussy, this rugged bag is loaded with pockets and compartments for all the baby essentials, with plenty of room left over for Dad’s toys (like his PDA, cell phone MP3 player and more).

4. Timi & Leslie Femme Luxe Bag ($360): Made from buttery-soft leather and looking nothing like a diaper bag, this gem is just as functional as the best of utilitarian diaper bags. Because functional can be fabulous, too.

5. Petunia Pickle Bottom Cross Town Clutch: Besides the hand embroidered details, we love how convenient it is for those quick trips with baby; a wipe-able, fully detachable, foldout changing pad is included, as well as a space for all your diapering essentials.
Check out our other favorites in our Ultimate Diaper Bag Guide.
