Spending Valentine’s Day at Home…Just the Way I Like it

Category: Valentine's Day

image
I’ve been reading all of the comments for this week’s Win it Wednesday, and it looks like most of you will be spending Valentine’s Day at home.  I’ll be doing the same thing; I can’t think of a better way to spend the evening than at home with the two guys I love the most.  We can go out to dinner another time, when there’s less of a crowd.

We’ll just have an early dinner—most likely Japanese take-out, but it all depends on what the little man wants— and it will be fun to hear about his first Valentine’s Day party at preschool.  We got really crafty making Valentine’s Day cards for all his little friends—glitter, ribbons, markers, foam hearts, you name it—and he was so cute carrying his big bag of Valentines to class.

We’ll play a few rounds of his favorite Thomas Mix ‘n Match Bingo Game, and if all goes well my husband will take over bed time duty so I can sneak in a nice long bath.  As for adult alone time, we’ll probably watch a movie, or if my husband gets his way we’ll be watching Lost.  Can’t complain.

Click here and tell us what you’re doing tonight.  You’ll be entered to win a fabulous HMR by Christine Price bag.

Top Five Children’s Valentine’s Day Books

Category: Valentine's Day Books

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about flowers and candy.  Give your love a love for books with these great Valentine’s Day titles.

image
1. Biscuit’s Valentine’s Day by Alyssa Satin Capucilli ($6.99): I fell in love with this dog back around Halloween. I tend to buy books with dogs in them for my little girl because we have dogs and Biscuit has become a favorite of mine AND hers.  In this book Biscuit and the Little Girl are making special valentines for their friends. The question is how will the Little Girl show Biscuit how she feels? Read it and find out.

image
2. My Fuzzy Valentine by Naomi Kleinberg and Louis Womble ($4.99): Elmo reigns supreme in our home. My toddler delights at anything with his red, furry body on it and this book will be no exception. In this adorable story, Elmo is searching high and low to find out who sent him an anonymous valentine. Which one of his monster friends sent it? You’ll have to read to find out.

image
3. Corduroy’s Valentine’s Day by Lisa McCue ($5.99): Corduroy is the kind of character that charms moms and children alike. It’s great that our children can be entertained by a character that was part of our own childhood. Kids will love reading about Corduroy’s plans to send all his friends some Valentine’s Day wishes and watching him get excited over the wishes he receives.

image
4. The Story of Valentine’s Day
by Nancy Skarmeas ($6.95): Valentine’s Day wasn’t always about giving gifts, and this book aims to help the youngest of children understand what Valentine’s Day is really about. Read the story of Saint Valentine and how he cared for the children of Rome. Sometimes the best gift is one that is rooted deep in the tradition and what’s better than a story on how the tradition began?

5. Tell us, what’s your favorite Valentine’s Day book for kids?

Crazy for Cupcakes: Sweet Finds for Valentine’s Day and Beyond

Category: Valentine's Day Children

image
There’s the frosting, the sprinkles and then the actual cake.  What’s not to love about cupcakes?

If you’re crazy for cupcakes like I am, then you’ll appreciate these cupcake treats I found on the web.  No added sugar, except for the oversized cupcake you can make from this Wilton Giant Cupcake Cast Pan ($27.99).

image

You can deocrate cupcakes, but have you ever considered decorating with cupcakes?  You can with this Jellio Birthday Cupcake Table ($750).  Use it as a small coffee table or a side table.  Either way it will sweeten up any room.  Available in red, orange, yellow, brown, silver, baby blue, violet, pink, or lime green.

image

These Western Chief Kids Giant Cupcake Rainboots ($39.50) will make anyone forget the lousy weather and think about cupcakes instead.  It’s hard not to since they’re pictured and spelled out on the boots.

image

Want to give something sweet but not too sappy to the new parents?  This Kee-Ka Cupcake Organic Three-Piece Set ($48) includes a super-soft bib, burp cloth and bodysuit.  A charming gift that’s practical, too.

Found any other cupcake goodies?  Please share!

Fall in Love with Red Hot Baby Gear

Category: Valentine's Day Children Strollers

There’s no shortage of red these days, even in the world of baby gear.  Make a statement and fall in love with the hottest modern baby gear…in the color red.  Here are some of our favorites that stand out from the rest of the pack.

image
Maclaren Triumph Stroller ($175): Just 11 pounds but fully loaded, the 2008 Triumph lives up to its name.  You get the reclining seat, large canopy, five-point safety harness and sleek styling of the trusted brand.  It’s safe to use from three months, and you’ll love pushing it until your tot hits 55 pounds.

image
Skip Hop Via Backpack Diaper Bag ($70): Count on Skip Hop for cool diaper bags, and this backpack doesn’t disappoint.  It’s compact but has ample space for all your baby essentials.  And your hubby can spot you in a crowd in seconds.

image
Ava Toddler Chair by Jennifer DeLong ($299): Your tot will have the hottest seat in the house with this comfy seat.  It’s tiny but big in style, and so chic you’ll wish you had a matching one in your size.

image
P’Kolino Play Ottoman ($189.99): Stash all of baby’s toys in it or flip the top over and use it as a small table.  If you’re a traditionalist, use it as an extra seat or a spot to kick up your feet.  No sharp edges to worry about.

Valentine’s Day: Our Guide to a Hot Night Out or In

Category: Valentine's Day

Whether you’re going out on Valentine’s Day or staying in, you can turn on the heat. So put on that little black (or red) dress and guys, no jeans! You can make your Valentine’s Day special and sexy, no matter where you spend it.

imageI admit I was skeptical when I learned about Starring...!, the fragrance and skin care line from celebrity sisters Courtney and Ashley Peldon. I had frankly never heard of them, although my daughter has. But all bets were off when my husband came close enough to get a whiff of “Femme Fatale.” “You smell sexy,” he said. That scent is a vanilla musk, and like all their products, it’s hand blended and made with organic and natural ingredients. Mine definitely lasted longer than most perfumes. ($20 - $40). Use the code NEW to get 15% off your first order.

image

I wasn’t sure what to make of the Foothongs ($15), thigh-high stockings designed to show off your toes. But again, it was my husband who declared these stockings sexy. I felt pretty sexy wearing them, though I’m not sure if I’m ready to wear them out.  Again, that doesn’t seem to bother my husband.

image

Your guy deserves to feel sexy, too. I know mine would love these red silk martini boxersicon ($21.50), but there are plenty of other styles available so he has something special to wear on Valentine’s Day. Even better, enter the code 3for2 and you’ll get a free pair of men’s underwear for every two you buy.

image

What is Valentine’s Day without a little chocolate? If you didn’t have room for dessert, you’ll definitely have room for the chocolate body paints in Lover’s Paintboxicon ($35). The set comes with dark, milk and white chocolate and a paintbrush, of course.

image

Finally, we all know how hard it is to find a babysitter, especially on the biggest date night of the year. With grandparents nearby, I’ve never had to use services like sittercity.com, but after reading the profiles of sitters in my area, I’m convinced this is a great idea. The site claims more than 150,000 caregivers around the country and offers background checks and screening. You control the contacts and decide who to respond to. Now “We don’t have a sitter” isn’t an excuse to stay in anymore.

DadFinds Valentine’s Day: Treat Him Right and Get it Quick at Saks

Category: Valentine's Day Dad

We know how things get. One minute you have plenty of time to buy your guy a great gift and the next minute, like right now, there’s less than a week to Valentine’s Day. But trust us, he won’t care, and he won’t even know that you lost track of time if you choose one of these classic gifts from Saks Fifth Avenue.  And you have until Tuesday, yes Tuesday, to get free rush shipping.

image
We love the mix of classic styling and mini polka dots of this Grigio Perla Baleno Cotton Robe ($187). He’ll love how the super soft cotton keeps him warm and cozy when you’re too busy to cuddle.

image
On a whim, OK, I was out of gift ideas, I bought my husband a leather money clip a few years ago. He loves it and uses it every day. It’s much less bulky than a wallet and it always looks sophisticated, even if he only has $2 in it. When it needs replacing I’d be tempted to give him this stainless steel version from Prada ($90). He deserves it.

image
While I still don’t get how guys are happy with just one or two watches, I can totally understand how he’d want to wear this Emporio Armani brown leather strap watch ($195) every day. It’s totally classic with a cool retro feel and love those Roman numerals. Perfect for work and a romantic evening out with you (That’s a hint there, dads).

Deal Alert: You can get your order in time for Valentine’s Day and get free shipping on orders of $150 or more if you order by 1pm EST on Feb. 12 and enter the code RUSHVAL.
