Remember the Furby, that weird robot toy that sort of looked like an owl and was so popular in the late ‘90s? It started talking an annoying language called Furbish and had to be taught English. Someone thought it would be funny to give my very young child one of those toys and it drove me crazy. She wasn’t old enough to take care of it so it kept talking Furbish. Then they brought the Furby back a couple of years ago, apparently slightly less obnoxious and a little bit cuter.
So then I see this Fuzz Luv, a hot pink, furry one-footed interactive “pet” that responds to touch. Cuddle the Fuzz Luv and it opens its eyes, and then it grows ears and holds out its arms for a hug. And if you keep paying attention to the Fuzz Luv, it will grow twice its size and trill and dance for you. But beware, make a sudden sound and Fuzzy will shrink back to its original size.
It gets better. Treat your Fuzz Luv right and it will eventually have a baby Fuzzy, or maybe twins!
I do like that it teaches children to be nurturing and attentive, but isn’t that what good old-fashioned dolls are for?
